House Safety Tips BY The Keymaker

How to Keep Thieves Away
Home security is a critical issue and must not be taken lightly. Burglaries are committed when thieves take advantage of opportunities like unlocked doors, spare keys left in obvious places, vulnerable locks and doors. They usually are done because of the negligence and carelessness of homeowners. You can reduce the risk the burglary by taking some simple precautions and making your property secure.

Install alarm system
Install a good alarm system in your home to make it secure. You may have to shell out some money which may appear to be wasteful initially, but it is a worthwhile investment. Studies have shown that if your house has a well-fitted alarm system there is less chance of burglary.

Secure doors
Doors are the main entry and exit route for most thieves and so it is very essential to secure them effectively. Doors can get damaged from wear and tear over time, especially in extreme climate. It is very important to check them once a quarter and ensure that they are properly sealed and cannot be pushed open with little pressure. If it requires repairing or replacing, do it immediately.

Regularly change locks
Like doors, even locks must be regularly checked and replaced, if necessary. Locks are designed to last long but they can also lose their strength with constant wear and tear. In the same way keys may become weak at the tip with frequent use and gradually break. So they must be regularly checked and if replacement is the only option, do it immediately.

Fit the right locks
Changing locks is essential but it is equally important to make sure that you are using the right lock. There are various types of locks available in the market and you must install one that is most appropriate for your door and security needs. Seek the advice of a locksmith as he is experienced in the field and can tell you better which type of lock is best for you.

Proper lighting
Properly lighting up the home can help in keeping thieves away. It is a useful deterrent. Thieves usually avoid getting inside the property which is well lit as they fear that they will be easily visible in those areas.

Secure the yard
Trim shrubs and trees around your doors and windows regularly. Overgrown shrubs and trees can be great hiding places for thieves to wait until the way is clear to enter the house. This does not imply that you remove all of them in your yard, simple keep them manicured.

Never leave the spare key out
It may seem a good idea to hide your key under a doormat or flower pot in case you are locked out of the house. But this is an open invitation to burglar. There are high chances that someone may see you taking out the key from these places and knows your usual hiding places. Instead, give the key to your neighbour or friend who lives nearby.
